Experience an array of landscapes and natural wonders during northern lights season on a driving adventure through West and South Iceland. Iceland’s dramatic southern coastline provides a stunning backdrop to discover these active volcanic lands. West Iceland’s highlights include unique lava formations the inspiring Snaefellsjokull glacier-volcano and historical sites from the Sagas.

Highlights

  • Explore your own selection of Iceland’s breathtaking natural wonders in your rental vehicle complete with GPS
  • Experience a soak in the world famous Blue Lagoon’s geothermal waters
  • Discover the many unforgettable attractions of the Snaefellsnes peninsula

Day 1: Reykjavik

Upon arrival into Keflavik Airport in Iceland make your way to pick up your rental car and begin your exploration of Iceland. The 40km stretch of road between Keflavik Airport and Reykjavik crosses moss covered lava flows and for many is like “driving on the moon.” There are also several interesting stops near the airport for those wanting to explore straight away including the Stekkjarkot Turf Farm and Íslendingur - a fully seaworthy replica of a Viking ship.
Upon arrival at your hotel the remainder of the day is set aside to explore Reykjavik or rest as you see fit.

Day 2: Reykjavik - Gullfoss Geysir the South Coast - Vik (B)

Head out of the city and drive to Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot spring, highlights of Iceland’s famous ‘Golden Circle’. Continue your trip stopping at highlights such as the stunning Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, featured in numerous films and TV shows including the History Channel epic Vikings. Continue on via the majestic Eyjafjallajokull and surrounding area, site of the infamous volcanic eruption in 2010 and another reminder of how geologically active Iceland is. Overnight in Vik area

Day 3: Vik - Skaftafell - Jokulsarlon – Vik (B)

Visit the majestic Skaftafell area which is located between two glaciers and offers many hiking possibilities. Short and easy trails lead to the dramatic Svartifoss waterfall and Skaftafellsjökull glacier, but for those who want to reach further out, the Morsárdalur valley and Kristínartindar mountain peaks are located here and are excellent hikes. Continue in your vehicle to the shimmering icebergs of Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon before returning to the charming village of Vik in the afternoon. Overnight in Vik area.

Day 4: Vik - Thingvellir – Borgarfjordur (B)

Drive to the UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, site of the Althing - the ancient Icelandic parliament first established in the year 930 - and a jewel of nature where the North American and European tectonic plates meet. The park itself is situated in a stunning volcanic landscape of mountains and lava flows on the edge of Iceland’s largest lake. Continue to Borgarfjordur fjord and visit the historic site of Reykholt, the remarkably beautiful Hraunfoss and Barnafoss waterfalls, and Deildartunguhver - the most powerful hot spring in Europe. We recommend a visit to the nearby Krauma natural geothermal spa where you can relax in pools fed by a perfect blend of water from Deildartunguhver and nearby glacial springs. Overnight in Borgarfjordur area

Day 5: Borgarfjordur - Snaefellsnes Peninsula – Borgarfjordur (B)

Explore the countless natural wonders of the Snaefellsnes peninsula referred to as “Miniature Iceland” as you can see everything the country has to offer in one area including volcanic craters, lava fields, a glacier, waterfalls, fjords, hot springs, black and golden sand beaches, lush meadows, fishing villages, and a stunning national park. With mountains to one side and the sea to the other, visit the wind-tangled Arnarstapi sea cliffs and the rocky beach of Djupalonssandur before driving along the north coast through quaint fishing villages. Overnight in Borgarfjordur area.

Day 6: Borgarfjordur - Reykjanes Peninsula - Blue Lagoon – Reykjavik (B)

Drive to the Reykjanes peninsula and visit the moon-like lava fields around Lake Kleifarvatn. Another suggested stop is at the Krysuvik geothermal area with bubbling mud pools. Next, visit Grindavik fishing village, famous for its heritage of producing saltfish (bacalao). Saltfish is undeniably responsible for the prosperity of the Icelandic nation, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th century when the industry was at its peak. A highlight for many is next, with time to relax at the famous Blue Lagoon with a refreshing dip in the pleasantly warm geothermal waters rich in silica and minerals that are great for the skin. Overnight in Reykjavik.
