Oman, though not on many people’s travel radar, is fast becoming the sparkling jewel of Middle Eastern tourism. With pristine Wadi and a sparkling coastline providing a beautiful contrast to the timeless desert landscapes, this fascinating destination is richly rewarding for those who experience. This 8 day itinerary allows you to sample the best – and most surprising – that Oman has to offer.

Highlights

  • Experience a boat ride on the sparkling coastal waters of Muscat
  • Savour a dinner under the expansive stars of the Arabian desert
  • View sea turtles clamber up the beach to lay eggs, as hatchlings emerge and make their way to the sea

Day 1: Muscat

Arrival at Muscat International Airport. After proceeding through immigration and collecting your luggage you will be met by your driver in the arrivals hall who will transfer you to your hotel for check-in. Overnight at your city hotel. (Please note: check-in time is from 14:00 hrs)

Day 2: Muscat (BL)

After breakfast at your hotel you will depart at 09:30am for a Muscat city tour which begins with a visit to the magnificent Grand Mosque, built with sandstone and marble. A beautiful Swarovski chandelier and a huge handmade Persian carpet adorn the main prayer hall. Then continue to the Muttrah Souk, a traditional oriental market. Enjoy the lively atmosphere and the scent of frankincense and spices.

After a light lunch at one of the restaurants near the souk, visit Bait Al Zubair Museum. This privately owned museum, located in the old town of Muscat, is known for its fine collection of traditional costumes, antique jewellery and weapons. Later, photo stop at Al Alam Palace, one of six royal residencies of the ruling Sultan, followed by a 2 hour boat ride along the coast of Muscat. On the way back to the hotel photo stop at the Royal Opera House and drive through the ministries and embassies area. Overnight at your hotel.

Day 3: Muscat – Sur (BD)

Today you will take the coastal road to Sur. On the way, visit the Bimah sinkhole, a beautiful natural crater filled with sparkling turquoise water. Then stop again and hike into Wadi Shab, one of Omans most beautiful wadis. Continue to the coastal town of Sur, a charming town whose history is indelibly linked to the pristine sea surrounding it. Check in to the hotel.

After dinner drive to Ras Al Jinz Turtle reserve for Turtle watching and enjoy the full cycle of laying and hatching of eggs. This unique experience is a highlight for many who visit Oman.

Day 4: Sur – Wahiba (BD)

Following breakfast and check out, you will drive to Sharqiyah Region and proceed to the enchanting Wadi Bani Khalid. Drive past the village with its endless date plantations. Feel free to plunge in and experience the crystal clear waters standing in stark contrast to the desert surrounds. After lunch, Drive to the vast expanse of the Wahiba Sands. The great Wahiba sands are longitudinal dunes 200 km long and 100 km wide running south from the Eastern Hajars to the Arabian Sea. You can venture up the high dunes and witness the unforgettable desert sunset. Check in at the camp before settling down to your dinner in the Arabian desert.

Day 5: Wahiba – Nizwa – Jebel Akhdar (B)

After breakfast, drive to Nizwa region and proceed to Birkat Al Mauz for a change of vehicle. This pretty oasis has much to offer for sheer scenic value. The town is abutted up to the jabals and the striped rocks (known as “anticlinal stratum” in geological terms) directly behind gives the town its nick name “The Rainbow City”. There are ruins and palm trees all around to explore. Proceed to Jebel Akhdar and Enjoy a sightseeing tour in Jebel Akhdar, located 2000 metres above sea level on the Western Hajar Mountains. Due to the high altitude and moist atmosphere, the region is ideal for agriculture and farming. The villages in the region are blessed with greenery and vegetation, perhaps why these mountains are called the “Green Mountain.”

Day 6: Nizwa Tour – Al Hamra – Bait Al Safah – Muscat (B)

After breakfast today visit the Nizwa Souk which has an expansive market showcasing a wonderful array of handicrafts. Later, proceed to Nizwa fort, an impressive castle built in 1650 but whose original underlying structure dates to the 12th century. Next, drive to Al Hamra before deepening the discovery of Omani roots by visiting the Bait Al Safah – a loiving museum in the old town. Proceed to Misfah Old House located in the middle of the old village of Misfat Al Abryeen. Traditional Lunch will be served cooked by local villagers.
