When to Visit

Best Time to Visit South Africa
Winter: May–August
Summer: September–April

South Africa’s climate is shaped more by its diverse topography and surrounding oceans than its latitude, resulting in generally mild and sunny weather year-round. While conditions vary across regions, the country is predominantly dry, with an average annual rainfall of 502 mm, and snowfall is confined to the highest mountain peaks.

Summer temperatures typically range from 15°C to 32°C (59°F–89°F), while winter averages between 0°C and 18°C (32°F–64°F). KwaZulu-Natal experiences a sub-tropical climate with high humidity during summer.

In the southern Gauteng region, summers are hot with occasional thunderstorms, and winters are frosty. The Lowveld, located in the eastern part of the region, enjoys milder winters. Similar conditions prevail in the Cape interior and the Free State.
