This short yet powerful journey traces New Zealand’s role in the North African campaign, honouring the service and sacrifice of those who fought in Tunisia during WWII. From the ancient ruins of Carthage to the quiet headstones at the Sfax War Cemetery, where 172 New Zealanders rest, this tour blends moments of reflection with the discovery of Tunisia’s rich cultural heritage.

Day 1: Tunis

Welcome to Tunisia. On arrival in Tunis you will be met by a representative of our local operator and assisted through the airport before being transferred to your hotel. Rest after your journey, or take an evening stroll through the streets of the capital. Overnight in Tunis.

Day 2: Tunis - Carthage & Sidi Bou Said - Sfax (BL)

Step back into antiquity at the ruins of Carthage, where centuries of history overlook the Mediterranean. Continue to Sidi Bou Said, a village of dazzling white walls and cobalt blue doors. In the afternoon, journey south along the coast to Sfax. Overnight in Sfax.

Day 3: Sfax War Cemetery & WWII Connections (BL

The day begins at the Sfax War Cemetery, where rows of headstones mark the names of New Zealanders who fell during the campaign to liberate Tunisia. Here, the desert sun casts long shadows across the graves, and the air carries a profound stillness. Learn more about the local events of 1943 and visit other WWII-related sites in the region. Overnight in Sfax.

Day 4: Sfax – Kairouan – El Jem – Hammamet (BL)

Travel inland to Kairouan, one of Islam’s holiest cities, with its Great Mosque and UNESCO-listed medina. Continue to El Jem, where the colossal Roman Amphitheatre stands as a testament to ancient grandeur. Arrive in Hammamet, a coastal haven for rest before your final day. Overnight in Hammamet.

Day 5: Departure from Tunis (B)

Morning transfer to Tunis Airport for your onward flight.

During the Holy Month of Ramadan Muslims fast, abstaining from eating, drinking & smoking during daylight hours (approx. 7am-6.30pm). As a sign of respect, tourists should also try to refrain eating in public during the fasting hours. Restaurants and Cafes in Hotels will be open, however limited alcohol may be available over this time. In 2026, Ramadan is expected to begin on the evening of Tuesday 17th February. After 30 days, or on sighting the full moon, Eid Al Fitr is celebrated & most public and private institutions close for at least three days.
