Day 1: Arrival Cochin
Upon arrival you will be met by a representative of our local operator and then transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure to unwind.
Day 2: Cochin (B)
Cochin is spread across islands and promontories between the Arabian Sea and the Backwaters. It became the principal harbour for the Malabar Coasts spice trade and developed as a very multicultural location. After breakfast take a half day city tour of Cochin visiting the Dutch Palace which has some of India’s most beautiful murals the Jewish Synagogue in the heart of Jew Town and the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets. See St Francis Church where Vasco da Gama was originally buried and the Santa Cruz Church with its pastel coloured interior and carved wooden panels. Later view a Kathakali dance performance in the evening.
Day 3: Cochin – Periyar (B)
Today drive to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary - famous for its jungle wildlife and birdlife. The Sanctuary is particularly famous for the herds of wild elephants that play in the Lake. Apart from elephants bison sambar wild boar langur otter and flying squirrel are common. There are also 246 species of birds and 112 species of butterfly.
Day 4: Periyar (B)
Early morning jungle walk around the Lakes edge spotting wildlife followed by a trip to a spice plantation.
Day 5: Periyar – Alleppey (cruise) (BLD)
Travel to the market town of Alleppey - 'The Venice of the East' before embarking on a cruise of the Backwaters on a houseboat for the day. The on-board chef offers traditional Kerala cuisine while you sit back in comfort and take in the breath-taking views of the lake remote villages and islands. Overnight on your houseboat.
Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays.
Day 6: Alleppey – Kumarakom (B)
Take breakfast on the houseboat while surrounded by wildlife before disembarking at your Backwater resort in Kumarakom. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax at the resort or indulge in some traditional Kerala Ayurvedic massage.
Day 7: Kumarakom – Cochin (B)
Transfer to Cochin for your onward flight or option to extend your holiday with a beach stay.
