Itinerary
Day 1: Muscat - Jabrin – Nizwa (B D)
After breakfast, depart for Jabrin, the finest of Oman’s castles, built in the late 17th century, which became a seat of Omani learning. The castle displays the highest achievement in Omani ceiling painting and beautifully executed wood carvings. Our next stop takes us to Wadi Nakher located in the depth of Oman’s deepest canyon. While heading for Jebel Shams stop at the terrace farming village of Wadi Ghul. Jebel Shams, the highest peak in the Jebel Akhdar range, offers a spectacular view. Visit Misfah, a pretty mountain village with ancient looking stone dwellings still in use today.
Day 2: Nizwa - Wahiba Sands (B D)
After breakfast, begin your day with a visit to the Nizwa Round tower Fort, famous for its large collection of traditional silver jewellery and the bustling Nizwa Souk – a local market full of bargains. Then drive to the pretty village of Birkat Al Mauz where you can take a walk through the lush green date plantations.
Next, proceed to Wadi Al Madeen. From here a 36 km stretch of winding road takes one to Jebel Al Akhdar (2000 mts above sea level) the green jewel of the Al Hajjar mountain ranges, a truly unique spot in the Arabian Peninsula with a cool climate up in the mountains. Al Jebel Al Akhdar is famed for its fruit orchards, typically laid out terrace style along the slopes of mountains, which are endowed with natural springs. The villages of Saiq, Wadi Bani Habib (the village of the old houses) & Al Ain dot the landscape.
Contrasting the cool and green mountainside, continue next to the Wahiba Sands, a vast, undulating red and white sea of sand dunes rising up to 200 metres which are host to a surprising variety of flora and fauna. The ever-changing patterns of the dunes are a photographer’s delight. An unforgettable evening awaits with dinner and overnight stay in Bedouin tents under the expansive canopy of desert stars.
Day 3: Wahiba Sands - Ras Al Jinz (B)
After breakfast at the camp, experience the thrill dune driving in the Wahiba Sands. Our experienced drivers will take you over these impressive dunes on a ride you will remember forever. Take a turn off the main road to the scenic Wadi Bani Khalid with its deep blue pools of water fringed by date palms - an ideal spot to relax or enjoy a refreshing swim. Proceed to Ras Al Hadd and check into your hotel.
At night, another unforgettable experience as you are guided down to the beach of Ras Al Jinz for a magical evening. See giant sea turtles make their way slowly up the beach to within meters of where they were hatched, up to 50 years before, to continue the legacy they have inherited. The beach is one of the largest turtle reserves in the world and is a highlight for many who visit Oman.
Day 4: Ras Al Jinz - Sur – Muscat (B)
After breakfast, depart towards Muscat. The drive to Muscat is definitely a postcard moment so don’t forget to have your camera handy. Sitting in the back of your air conditioned vehicle you will have time to take in all that you see as you pass through a number of small towns which line the sparkling coast on the way to Muscat. Most of the towns along the route make their livelihood from fishing and the everyday activities of locals viewed as you drive through gives a fascinating glimpse of traditional Omani life. Arrive in Sur, a large town with an ancient harbour that still houses some of the original Dows that are still used today to catch the pride of the Omani oceans.
Continue to the beautiful Fins beach for a swim. The next stop is the Bimah Sinkhole, a spectacular limestone crater with blue green water at the bottom.
Proceed to Wadi Arbayeen with its refreshing deep pools of water set among the date palms. Arrive in Muscat late this afternoon.
