Mt Everest has a special place in the hearts and minds of many New Zealanders, and the approach from Tibet in the north has become accessible for almost all who desire to stare into the face of the world’s highest peak. Beginning in the mysterious Lhasa and travelling overland to Everest Base Camp, this itinerary features breath-taking landscapes and fascinating culture.
Upon arrival at Lhasa Airport you will be met by our local operator who will transfer you to your hotel and assist with check in. The rest of the day is at leisure to unwind and acclimatize.
After breakfast at your hotel, take a sightseeing tour of Potala Palace, the iconic centre of Tibetan life. Following lunch, depart to the Sera Monastery to see the fascinating display of Monk debating.
This morning drive to Drak Yerpa, an ancient monastery and cave site which formally housed 300 monks. After lunch, visit Jokhang Temple, the oldest part of which was built in 652 with the most recent renovations being done by the fifth Dalai Lama in 1610. Return to your hotel following an excursion to Barkhor Street, a popular location for pilgrims and bargain hunters alike.
Following breakfast, depart for the drive to Shigatse. On the way, stop at Yamdrok Lake to admire the beautiful azure waters surrounded by the Himalaya foothills. Porceed through Gyantse town and visit Palkor Monastery before arriving in Shigatse, the gateway to the Chinese side of Mt Everest. At 3800m above sea level, the remainder of the day is set aside to acclimatise.
Take a slow drive over rough terrain to reach the remote Rongbuk Monastery. At 4980m above sea level, it is claimed to be the highest monastery in the world. And with such dramatic views of Mt Everest it is hard to argue with that sentiment. Accommodation tonight is in a basic local guesthouse.
An early wake up will be well rewarded with a brilliant sunrise over the highest peak in the world. Later, head close to the Everest Base Camp to view the life of the Sherpas and climbers who brave this mountain. Later, return to Shigatse.
Visit the famous Tashilunpo Monastery, founded in 1447 by the very first Dalai Lama. Then begin the journey back to Lhasa, descending back through the foothills of the Himalaya and the stunning landscape of the Yarlung Tsangpo River.
Transfer to the airport or train station for your onward connection.
