Day 1: Tokyo
Welcome to Japan. Upon arrival at Narita or Haneda Airport, you will be met by an English-speaking assistant at the arrival lobby. A shared shuttle bus will transfer you to your hotel where accommodation has been reserved for three nights. The rest of the day is free to recover from travel and take a gentle first walk into Tokyo’s neighbourhood life—small izakaya lanes, convenience-store snacks, and bright local arcades. Overnight in Tokyo.
Day 2: Tokyo - Highlights (B)
After breakfast, meet your guide for a full-day tour using public transportation. Visit the bustling Tsukiji Market – a cluster of food stalls and specialist shops, ascend Tokyo Skytree Japan’s landmark broadcast tower with dramatic city vistas from its high observation decks, great for orienting yourself to Tokyo’s scale and river corridors, and explore Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo’s oldest temple, approached via the colourful Nakamise shopping street lined with traditional crafts and snacks. Return to the hotel in the afternoon.
Day 3: Tokyo - Modern & Historic (B)
Travel with your guide via public transport to visit TeamLab, an immersive, map-free digital art museum where projections and interactive installations flow from room to room; it’s sensory and unlike a traditional museum. Borderless, admire the Imperial Palace outer grounds, calm palace gardens and elegant bridges give a sense of Japan’s imperial history amid modern Tokyo; Shinjuku Gyoen — a peaceful, beautifully maintained park that mixes formal French and English gardens with traditional Japanese landscaping. The evening is free.
Day 4: Tokyo – Hakone (B)
Depart Tokyo with your guide and driver for Hakone where accommodation is reserved for two nights. Here see Hakone’s dramatic volcanic landscapes and lake which are a contrast to Tokyo’s light and glass. You’ll experience the sulfur-smoking, ride the Hakone Ropeway for sweeping valley and (on clear days) Mt Fuji views, and take a scenic Lake Ashi cruise that frames the shoreline from the water. Overnight Hakone.
Tip: Mountain weather changes quickly — bring a lightweight waterproof layer and expect visibility for Mt Fuji to vary with conditions.
Day 5: Hakone – Mt Fuji Region (B)
Embark on a scenic day tour with your guide and driver to the iconic Mt. Fuji area. Begin with a visit to Lake Kawaguchi, where you can take in the panoramic views of Mt. Fuji reflected on the tranquil waters (on clear days). Continue to the charming village of Oshino Hakkai, known for its crystal-clear spring ponds and traditional thatched-roof houses. Then, head to Arakurayama Sengen Park, home to the famous Chureito Pagoda, offering one of the most picturesque views of Mt. Fuji framed by cherry blossoms or autumn foliage (season-dependent). After a full day of exploration, return to Hakone for an overnight stay.

Discover Nagano’s heritage with visits to Zenkoji Temple and Zenkoji Street. In winter, try your hand at soba-making in Togakushi; in summer, visit the Ninja House instead. Return to your hotel for an evening at leisure.
Day 8: Nagano - Kyoto (B)
After breakfast, transfer to the station with your guide and board the bullet train to Kyoto, Japan’s cultural heart. After arrival, explore the atmospheric Gion district — narrow streets, wooden machiya houses and (at dusk) the chance to glimpse geisha or maiko moving between appointments. Kyoto evokes Japan’s pre-modern capital in every alley and shrine.
Tip: Evening in Gion is atmospheric — keep your voice low and respect local privacy when photographing streets and people.
Day 9: Kyoto (B)
Travel by public transport with your guide to Kyoto’s scenic Arashiyama district. Walk the Bamboo Path for that otherworldly columnar light and shadow, cross Togetsukyo Bridge, and visit Tenryuji Temple with its carefully designed landscape garden—classic Zen aesthetics and seasonal colour. Consider a stroll along the Oi River for local cafés and craft shops. Afternoon at leisure.

Accommodation
The hotels specified offer the facilities you need to feel at home, even when you're away from it. In some provincial areas, facilities may be more limited. Where possible, hotels are chosen for local history, style and charm, and always for location.
Double rooms can be requested however on occasions this may not be possible and a twin room will be provided.
Hotel room sizes in Japan (especially single rooms) are relatively small by international standards.
Dress Code
There is no strict dress code for visiting Japanese temples and shrines however modest/conservative clothing (to show respect at a place of worship) is recommended. Men: long pants. Women: skirt of long pants and shoulders covered. Hats are to be removed and you may be required to take off your shoes when entering temple buildings.
Luggage
You will be required to carry your own luggage at times as porters are not available - you should also be capable of carrying your own bags on and off transport, and up and down stairs. It is strongly recommended that you travel with luggage with wheels and a handle for your comfort.
Luggage courier services are used because most Japanese trains (with the exceptions of the Narita Airport Express servicing Tokyo's Narita Airport, and the Haruka Express servicing Kansai Airport) do not have luggage compartments. Your day-by-day itinerary will note when your main piece of luggage is couriered to an advance destination. Please make sure to bring a smaller luggage bag for over-nighting on nights when you will be separate from your main piece of luggage.
Rail
Rail travel is a significant feature of the Japan Independent Holidays. Japan has one of the most efficient and comfortable rail systems in the world. Trains run on time, almost all the time, and attendant service standards are immaculate. Japan is home of course to the famous shinkansen ‘bullet trains’ which can travel over 300 kilometres per hour (186 miles per hour) and you may travel on some of these. For all these reasons trains are used to cover longer distances in Japan. Your Small Group Journey includes a Japan Rail Pass, which will be provided to you at tour commencement and which you will use to board inter-city trains. As tourist numbers are increasing rapidly, the Central Japan Railway Company has implemented the advanced oversized baggage reservation to ensure the security, safety and convenience of all passengers.
Sightseeing
All sightseeing tours require a moderate amount of walking around historical / cultural sites. A good level of fitness will ensure you get a maximum enjoyment from your visit.
